January Motorcycle Events
© ArenaCross

18-19 January

Arenacross Round 1 & 2

SSE Arena, 2 Queens Quay, Belfast BT3 9QQ

We say:

Hugely popular with families, this import from the States has everything – stunts, racing and a tinnitus-challenging atmosphere. Better still, it’s all indoors so it can’t be rained off. The tour is less ambitious than previous years, but it’s still held at various venues until the end of February, so if you want to see some back-flips, 360’s and actual competitive racing, get in quick.

Prices: Adults from £20.50, kids from £14.75

Highlights February 2019

9-10 February

The Dragon Rally

Snowdonia, Conway, North Wales (precise details are released nearer the day)

Wikipedia says:
(Attracts] 1,500 to 2,000 riders depending on the weather and location. The rally is famed for its toughness and spartan facilities. Riders often have to endure miserable riding conditions to attend the rally and, once on site, they are expected to camp without regard to the weather conditions. It is an event held in veneration by large numbers of motorcyclists as a test of stamina and endurance because (in the first two decades at least) it was common to have to endure snow and ice to ride there. The Dragon is often grouped with the German Elefantentreffen (Elephant Rally) and the Norwegian Krystall Rally.

Prices:  Free to watch

16-17 February

The Classic Dirt Bike Show Sponsored by Hagon Shocks

The International Centre, St Quentin Gate, Telford, Shropshire TF3 4JH

They say:
Telford’s annual off-road and road-racing show has a tradition of drawing the biggest names and 2017 is no different. Clubs and private entrants will pack into the venue once again, bringing together the most fascinating collection of historic off-road machines you’ll find under one roof, and they’ll be joined by a raft of traders offering everything from parts and spares through to accessories and riding kit, plus project bikes…if you’re tempted.

Prices: Gate: Adults £13, Kids under 12, free

North West 200

The Paddock, Portrush Road, Portstewart, Northern Ireland, BT55 7PT

Not a ‘poor man’s TT’ (although a damn sight easier to get to) but one of the world’s fastest road races attracting over 100,000 spectators in a festival atmosphere with another 2m around the world tuning in and wishing they were there. Along with the Ulster GP, this race week attracts all of the top riders, and all of the ballyhoo that comes along with them. Epic.

Famous for its ‘Paddock Specials’ – 100 invitation-only bikes – that you can get close to before the majority of them tear off up Prescott Hill. And then there’s the best bit… You can run your own bike ‘Up the Hill’. Rare Vintage, Classic, Modern, Special Build, Custom, Factory Race Bikes, Monowheels, Jet Powered and more. The Kickback Custom Show will also be held at this year’s Prescott – see below for more details. 15-16 June

Kickback

Bugatti Owners Club, Prescott Hill, Gotherington, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, GL52 9RDZ

They say:
This year Kickback will be held at the Prescott Bike Festival. Kickback is a celebration of engineering and design excellence which embraces the modern custom scene and the new wave. Kickback is a definitive showcase for rare classics and customised gems; built in sheds, garages and workshops by young engineers as well as experienced professionals. Kickback may not be considered mainstream, or for wealthy city people; it’s a cool and subversive event that champions the offbeat and loves bringing like-minded people together to discuss anything from frame modifications and flat trackers to café racers and clip-ons…

4-7 July

Goodwood Festival of Speed

Goodwood Estate, Chichester, West Sussex, PO18 0PX

We say:
Yes, we know it’s around 95% things with four wheels and you need a second mortgage to do the thing properly (one day is never enough). But if you are a proper petrolhead you can click on the link below and almost smell the exhaust fumes coming out of the screen. The best bit is you get really close to the machines, as you have the freedom of the paddock. It’s that good, it gives you wood.

Prices: Day: Adults, From £37, Kids 13-21 from £18.50. Weekend: Adults from £164, Kids 13-21 from £82

27-28 July

Motorcycle Rider Weekend

RAF Shawbury, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, SY4 4DZ

We say:
A chance to do a track day on an RAF airfield! This 2.3 mile track is made available and has been, “custom designed with the motorcyclist in mind, and features a mixture of sweeping bends, fast straights, and complex chicanes, with something to appeal to every rider… the layout provides sufficient variety to keep riders interested, yet is short enough that it can be learnt and ridden close to perfection within the day.” Can’t say fairer than that, and the non-riders are kept happy too, with stalls, food, bouncy castles (and sumo suits!) and more.

Prices: Riders £90 for one day, £150 for both (six x 20-minute sessions), Spectators £5, Kids under 10 free
